The 12 Habits of 2020: Why I’m Ditching Resolutions

New Year, New Me. New Year, Better you. Starting off by disclosing that I’m a big fan of refreshing my surroundings and taking a introspective moment every now and again. That said, like every Tom, Dick and Harry, I’ve never stuck to any self-prescribed change ever.

My solution? Ditching the whole resolutions idea and opting for the 12 habits of 2020. In a nutshell, trying to adopt roughly one habit a month by doing it everyday. Therefore, testing the ultimate thing blocking me from making habit changes in my life: challenging self-discipline.

Where Did the Idea Come From?

The original idea came from Emma Guns, no less. A multi-talented podcast host and journalist who embarked on a 26 habit journey over the course of 2018. I absolutely loved the way she went about tackling each habit and her reasons behind each of them. Overall, she took the nonsense of out resolutions and created a format that is actually sustainable.

Why am I doing this?

I quite like the idea of integrating habits I admire into my routine. My SS2019 goals post is a prime example of this. However, the daunting task of upholding them for an entire year has consequently got me failing miserably. While I’m not imagening that keeping up with this 12-habits plot will be any different, at least, I will come away with something with this format.

Ground Rules

The rules for the 12 habits of 2020 are quick straightforward:
  1. Each habit requires 30 consecutive days of practice.
  2. Each habit follows its own set of rules, naturally.
  3. A missed day results in a 5 EUR fine which will be donated to a good cause at the end of the year.
  4. There is one joker day a month/habit to redeem anytime and is cumulative.

What are we starting off with?

The first habit is: reading! The perfect activity to do curled up on the couch on a cold winter’s day, for instance. Or so I tell myself but obviously don’t actually practice. Now, where did I put my book?
