30 Days of Meditation – 12 Habits of 2020

The 30 days of meditation? How trendy of me right? Perhaps. In all honesty, I can’t remember the last time I’ve fallen asleep without listening to something. Be it a TedTalk, a Podcast, or someone endlessly describing the wonders of this new skincare product they’ve been using.

Before you even think it, I’m hyperaware that it’s a terrible habit to indulge. I’m overstimulating my brain by keeping a phone next to me while sleeping and all that. The thing is, I just don’t have 2+ hours a night to overanalyse my days every interaction and beat myself up over what I could do better. I was there and it’s simply exhausting.

Similarly, I decided that I no longer have the time to spend overthinking while commuting, when alone, or even when I’m listening to other people talk. Would it not be great to have your thoughts be processed at the same speed as what’s happening around you IRL?

And that, my friends, is why the next habit of 2020 is 30 days of meditation.

Rules

  1. Meditate for at least 5 minutes – not particularly time-consuming, but challenging nonetheless.
  2. The meditation can be guided, or not (not that I expect, at this stage, to freestyle).
  3. It cannot be done while multitasking (ex. while brushing my teeth).
  4. The surroundings are ideally undisturbed and quiet.

Now, I don’t expect to be the next Deepak Chopra, I merely wish to take a break from my thoughts even for a few minutes at a time. My goal is to learn different elementary meditation techniques through guided meditation practices that I can afterwards comfortably apply when in need. In essence, I want to build myself a tool kit to stop a pestering thought in its tracks and steer it in another direction. That doesn’t seem too outrageous does it?

And with a deep breath in through the nose, I’m beginning my journey to a clearer mind.
